Some information from Russell Group Universities

The 24 research-intensive, world-class universities that make up the Russell Group are all unique institutions, each with its own history and ethos, but they share some distinguishing characteristics.

Our members are committed to maintaining the very best research, an outstanding teaching and learning experience and unrivalled links with business and the public sector.

Russell Group universities play an important part in the intellectual life of the UK and have huge social, economic and cultural impacts locally, across the UK and around the globe. Between them they produce more than two-thirds of the world-leading research produced in UK universities, support over 300,000 jobs across the country and have a total economic output of more than £32 billion every year. Last year, more than 395,000 undergraduates and over 184,000 postgraduates were studying at a Russell Group university.

They are global institutions, attracting students and staff from around the world, and working with major multinational businesses and international organisations. Thirty-four percent of academic staff and 28% of students are of non-UK nationality, attracted to our universities by the quality, relevance and reputation of the research groups and departments they join.

Our member universities have a strong role and influence within their regional and local communities, collaborating with businesses on joint research projects, supplying highly-qualified and highly-motivated graduates to the local workforce, and working with schools and colleges to help raise attainment and aspirations and to provide information, advice and guidance to pupils.
