Association for Physical Education Grants Prestigious Award
Physical Education at Ormiston Venture Academy was recently assessed and awarded the prestigious Association for Physical Education (afPE) Quality Mark, which recognizes its outstanding commitment to PE. This is the first time the award has been given to a secondary school in the county of Norfolk.
It is awarded for both the quality of PE in a school’s curriculum and for its commitment to extracurricular sport. Venture undertook a rigorous self-evaluation and a review process to get this award, which involved a visit from the Chairman of the afPE.
The Quality Mark recognises the exceptional and innovative practice of the PE Curriculum at Venture. It will further raise the profile of the school’s PE Department which saw one of its alumni, Jessica-Jane Applegate, win a gold medal for swimming at the Paralympic Games just after finishing her studies at Venture in 2012.
The afPE Quality Mark is the benchmark and industry standard for high quality in PE and the achievement demonstrates the continuous hard work that is being undertaken on a day to day basis at Venture.
Many sports clubs are available for after academy enrichment. Many are run by members of our community. BTEC Sport, Cambridge National Sport Studies, Sports Leader course and the Venture Elite programme runs at Venture. We are proud to say that because of our positive results PE is now a core subject for every student in Key Stage 4. The sports that are involved include Trampolining, Badminton, Football and Netball. With a focus on leading and umpiring, as well as being assessed practically.
The Sports Leader Course is a chance for students to have some responsibility within Physical Education in the Academy. It is a chance to show off their coaching skills, organisational skills and their ability to teach others. Sports Leaders work with younger students both in and outside of the Academy and are positive role models. This could be their first stepping stone towards becoming a PE teacher, sports coach, team manager, personal trainer or something else related to sport. Contact Miss Ermini for further information.
